Leuven AI Law & Ethics Conference (LAILEC) \u2013 #LAILEC2020, took place on 18 February 2020 in Leuven and was attended by more than 120 participants. The conference gathered researchers from multiple disciplines, business, practitioners, policy makers and other societal actors to discuss contemporary legal, ethical, regulatory and governance challenges of artificial intelligence. LAILEC continues the tradition of keeping its audience informed about the latest trends at the crossroads of law, ethics, and technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year\u2019s edition of the conference was organised under the title: \u201cThe Good, the Bad and the Regulated: In Search of a Common Denominator for AI in Business and Society\u201d. LAILEC2020 focused on artificial intelligence and Industry 4.0, accountability, sustainability, regulatory sandboxes, human rights, human enhancement, and many more topics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the aegis of SeCoIIA and other EU-funded research projects, the conference explored the challenges regulators, businesses and society face regarding AI, through the use-cases of Industry 4.0 and healthcare, putting an emphasis on the overall commitment of the EU towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals and international business and human rights standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SeCoIIA was represented at the event by its impact manager Prof Isabel Pra\u00e7a (ISEP), the project coordinator, Adrien Becue (Airbus), the Legal Referent and lead of the research strand on accountability, Ivo Emanuilov (KUL), and Prof Peggy Valcke (KUL), as a principal investigator of this research stream. Prof Valcke gave a keynote speech on her work as a Vice Chair of the Council of Europe\u2019s Ad Hoc Committee on Artificial Intelligence<\/a>. In a dedicated panel on Industry 4.0, Adrien Becue presented the main challenges and use cases of artificial intelligence in Industry 4.0 and collaborative manufacturing. Ivo Emanuilov, LL.M, who is also one of the co-founders of LAILEC, presented a framework for human rights due diligence in the context of AI and IIoT-driven Industry 4.0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
